a project involving citizens in public art
1999, public space, Dordrechts Museum and Art Council Dordrecht, NL
-b-l-i-k-o-p-e-n-e-r- (‘eye / can opener’), an art project in the Dutch city of Dordrecht, consisted of cooking, a living room around Ary Scheffer (the best-known sculpture in town) and an exhibition about the life on the inland waterways. During -b-l-i-k-o-p-e-n-e-r-, a website collecting stories of Dordrecht was launched (still active, see ‘Verhalen van Dordrecht’).
The six cooking-performances by the artist Christine Bernhard (Düsseldorf, DE) focussed on ‘transference of energy’.
The living room called ‘Visiting Ary’ was a work by Tazro Niscino; a Japanese artist now living and working in Cologne, DE. He gave this statue, standing on a plinth in the town centre since 1862, the opportunity to receive guests in a domestic environment. Both artists cooperated with Wapke Feenstra to realize their works.
The whole of -b-l-i-k-o-p-e-n-e-r- was an arrangement of different approaches questioning the perception and the public art of this historical town. The image of Dordrecht and contemporary developments in public art (1999) were shared with the public. Posters, publicity material and a magazine about the project were distributed widely. The -b-l-i-k-o-p-e-n-e-r- magazine (sold out) contained documentation of the projects; with texts by Gerrit Willems, Jeroen Boomgaard and Wapke Feenstra. Publisher and commissioner was the Art Council Dordrecht. The project website with some texts (in Dutch) and project pictures is still online. See connections.
