NEsTWORK took place as part of MANIFESTA 1 from June 1996 until September 1996 in four locations in Rotterdam. It’s an artists’ initiative from people who live and work within the artist and cultural field of Rotterdam. In NEsTWORK the nest and the network are inseparable.
NEsTWORK was a response to MANIFESTA 1, which offered a challenge in May1995 to artists and curators in Rotterdam to establish an international platform for the arts. MANIFESTA 1 stresses a new European identity consisting of aspects of migration, translation, communication, politics, etc. NEsTWORK presents the locality of Rotterdam as being host to international art and the effects of international guest artists on Rotterdam. Art occupies space and space must be allowed to art. International artists take up space already and by sharing this space with locals, locality is stronger loaded with identity.
MANIFESTA 1 started successfully in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. It expressed the topographic and mental space of Europe through art, philosophy and technology. NEsTWORK staffed the Documentation and Information Centre of the CBK on a daily bases with information about local initiatives and an extensive artists map of Rotterdam. Artists, critics, philosophers, musicians, writers and politicians alike started engaging in discussions on the concepts of MANIFESTA 1. This took place mainly in Zaal De Unie and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The artists’ initiative B.A.D. participated as well.
NEsTWORK organized 41 programs with activities, performances, concerts, films, lectures and debates in a period of three months time. Wapke Feenstra is one of the initiators of NEsTWORK, which consisted of Karin Arink, Wapke Feenstra, Jeanne van Heeswijk, Edwin Janssen, Menna Laura Meijer, Kamiel Verschuren and Ruud Welten.

NEsTWORK made the book “a blueprint for NEsTWORKING” at the invitation of MANIFESTA 2. The book was presented in Luxembourg and in Rotterdam.

NEsTWORK is onderdeel van Manifesta 1 vanaf juni 1996 tot september 1996 en vindt plaats op vier verschillende locaties in Rotterdam. Het is een tijdelijk kunstenaarsinitiatief ontstaan uit mensen die wonen en werken binnen het artistieke en culturele veld van Rotterdam. In NEsTWORK kunnen het nest en het netwerk niet van elkaar worden gescheiden.
NEsTWORK ontstond als reactie op MANIFESTA 1, dat een open uitschrijving in mei 1995 richtte aan kunstenaars en curatoren in Rotterdam om een internationaal platform voor de kunsten te vormen. MANIFESTA 1 benadukte een nieuwe Europese identiteit bestaande uit factoren zoals migratie, vertaling, communicatie, politiek etc. Daartegenover benadrukt NEsTWORK de lokale ruimte: de rol van Rotterdam als gastheer van internationale kunst en het effect van de internationale gastkunstenaar op Rotterdam. Het uitgangspunt is dat kunst altijd ruimte inneemt en dat er ruimte geboden moet worden aan kunst, en dat de ruimte van de internationale gastkunstenaar al bestaat. Door die ruimte te delen met lokale kunstenaars, verwierf het verblijf een sterkere identiteit.
MANIFESTA 1 startte succesvol in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Het drukte de topografische en mentale ruimte van Europa uit door middel van kunst, filosofie en technologie. NEsTWORK begon vervolgens het Documentatie- en Informatiecentrum van het Rotterdamse Centrum Beeldende Kunst dagelijks te vullen met informatie over lokale initiatieven en met een uitgebreide kunstenaarskaart van Rotterdam. Rotterdamse kunstenaars, critici, filosofen, muzikanten, schrijvers en politici begonnen onder leiding van NEsTWORK deel te nemen aan discussies over het gedachtengoed van MANIFESTA 1. Dat gebeurde vooral in Zaal De Unie en Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Ook het kunstenaarsinitiatief B.A.D. nam deel.
NEsTWORK organiseerde 41 dagprogramma’s met activiteiten, optredens, concerten, films, lezingen en debatten in een tijdperk van drie maanden.
